Credit card companies operate a ‘chargeback service’ to file and receive objections on behalf of customers when disputes arise between customers and merchants in overseas transactions. If the content is judged to be justified, the card company will return the amount charged.
According to related industries on the 30th, the proportion of overseas direct purchases is increasing every year. According to Statistics Korea, overseas direct purchases increased from 5.1 trillion won in 2021 to 5.3 trillion won in 2022, and rose to 6.8 trillion won last year.
The demand for overseas direct purchase continues to increase as it has the advantage of being able to purchase products at a cost-effective price and purchasing products that are not sold domestically. However, caution is required as fraud continues, such as products purchased directly not being delivered, products different from the purchased product being delivered, or the payment amount being different from the actual credit card payment amount.
If a problem like this arises and a dispute arises, the chargeback service can be an alternative. When using the chargeback service, you must apply with the credit card company that made the payment within 120 days from the transaction date or product delivery date. ▲Visa, Master Card, and Amex can request cancellation within 120 days from the date of purchase. ▲Union Pay can only request cancellation of transactions approved within 180 days. You can apply if the period of non-receipt of the product continues for 15 to 30 days from the date of purchase.
The most important thing when applying for this service is supporting documentation. To support the consumer’s claim, you must submit ▲conversation history with the seller, ▲product sales screen, ▲purchase history and receipt, etc. In particular, if you have received confirmation of cancellation from the business, submitting the relevant information may be more advantageous. When a consumer applies for the chargeback service, the seller must respond to the credit card company within 45 days. In addition, when problems such as bankruptcy or loss of contact with airlines or travel agencies occur after paying for overseas airline tickets or hotels, this can be resolved using the chargeback service.
