In Japan, the hometown tax system has been well established. The reason the amount has increased so much is because the tax reduction effect is greater than other donation systems. Japan’s hometown tax system provides a full deduction for amounts exceeding 20,000 won (there are deduction limits by income) and provides a gift in return up to 30% of the donation.

The limit is 5 million won per person per year. You can divide it into several places or do it multiple times in one place.
– Tax deduction benefits
The full amount is tax deductible up to 100,000 won, and 16.5% of the amount exceeding 100,000 won is deducted.
Example) If you donate 500,000 won, 166,000 won, which is 16.5% of 100,000 won and 400,000 won, or 66,000 won, will be deducted as a tax deduction.
– Gift in return
The return gift is paid out within 30%, and if you donate 100,000 won to the local government of your choice on the Hometown Love eum website, you will receive 30,000 gift points and can choose a gift from that local government.

There are agricultural products, marine products, livestock products, processed foods, daily necessities, and local gift certificates. If there is an area you want, you can search by entering the area in the search box.
Famous products include Imsil-gun cheese and Wando abalone. If there is a special product you want, enter the product in the return gift search and search. If there is a desired area, select the area in the region selection and search.

After registering as a member on the Hometown Love eum website, you can donate to the local government and select a gift in return. Let’s look at the donation process one by one.
1. Sign up

▲ After agreeing to the terms and conditions, proceed to [Next].
▲ Proceed with mobile phone identity verification.
▲ Your name will be automatically entered, and then enter your ID and password.
▲ Enter your email address and your residential address.
▲ You can select any local government of interest or gift of interest and enter it.
2. Donate
Once you have completed signing up, make a donation to the local government of your choice.
Go to Hometown Love Donation
▲ Since we looked at the gift items earlier, choose the area you like. I chose Find in List.
▲ Points are given at 30% of donations, so if there is a product you want, you must donate according to the points. As an example, we chose Incheon Metropolitan City headquarters, which provides local gift certificates.
※ Set the donation amount according to the points
If you want a 30,000 point product, you must donate 100,000 won, and if you want a 60,000 point product, you must donate 200,000 won.
Points for desired product ÷ 0.3 = donation amount required
If the product you want costs 40,000 points, you must donate more than 133,333 won.
▲ Click Check Address and enter the last digits of your resident registration number, and it will automatically check if you can donate.
▲ I am a resident of Gyeonggi-do, and I can donate to other Gyeonggi-do regions where I do not reside, such as Anseong-si and Yeoju-si in Gyeonggi-do, but I cannot donate to the Gyeonggi-do headquarters and the region where I reside. When I select Gyeonggi Province Headquarters, a notification appears asking me to select another local government.
▲ Enter the donation amount and select [Receive gift in return]. Click [Pay donation].
▲ Receive the electronic payment number, enter the characters to prevent automatic entry, and click Search. In Seoul, payment is made using E-Tax, and in other regions, payment is made using Wi-Tax.
▲ Check the contents. After checking the payment amount, select [Pay Immediately].
▲ Since it is outside of Seoul, it will be held at Witax. Select the payment method you want, such as bank transfer, credit card, or simple payment, and proceed with the payment.
3. Choose a gift in return
Once points are awarded, you can select and order a gift from the region where you donated.

▲ Select and purchase the searched product according to the points.

– I have points left, how long can I use them?
Points have a validity period of 5 years.
– Can I donate to one area multiple times?
You can donate multiple times to multiple locations, and you can donate multiple times to one location. You can donate up to the annual limit of 5 million won.
– I donated, but I did not receive any points.
You can check the results by clicking Check payment results on the payment date in Donation My Page > Donation History Status. Confirmation is possible 10 to 20 minutes after payment, and points are awarded immediately after payment confirmation.
※ Recently, due to high usage, it is taking time to check donation details and pay points.
If points are not paid even after the payment result is confirmed, if points are still not paid, you can inquire 1:1 or call the customer center at 1522-2431.
– Is it possible to cancel payment?
If you have received an electronic payment number but have not yet paid, it will be automatically canceled after the due date. If you have received an electronic payment number and have already paid through Witax or Etax, you cannot cancel your donation.
– Can I use my points to purchase gifts from other local governments? An error message appears saying ‘This is not a region where orders can be placed.’
You can only purchase gift items from the local government you donated with the points you receive after donating.
– If I only have 30,000 points, can I purchase a 40,000 point product through additional payment?
Currently, other payments other than donation points are not possible.
