There are things you must check before buying a used car. They are the ‘Used Car Performance Status Inspection Record (hereinafter referred to as the Performance Record)’ and the ‘Insurance Accident History’. Accidents and repair parts are checked in the Performance Record. This is important when considering whether the price is reasonable rather than dividing good and bad used cars.

Next, you should look at the ‘Insurance Accident History’. This is because you can find out even minor repair costs that are not listed in the Performance Record. What should you do if there are repair costs covered by insurance but no records in the Performance Record? Let’s check with a real case.

Recently, I was choosing a used car. During that process, I found out that there were repair costs in the insurance history, but there was no trace in the Performance Record. I wanted to know the exact details. However, there was no information in the Performance Record. How can I check the repair history in this case?

First, go to ‘Car 365 (car365.go.kr)’ operated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority. Here, you can check the car registration book, inspection, registration fees, etc. Among them, you can enter the vehicle number in the ‘Used Car Real Estate Search’ menu. This will allow you to immediately check whether the vehicle is officially registered with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the local used car branch.
The search results confirmed that it is a used car registered according to the correct procedure. Now, let’s take a look at the maintenance history of 430,000 won. If you click the ‘Vehicle History Check’ button on the search screen, you will be taken to the National Automobile Civil Complaint Portal (ecar.go.kr) (Of course, you can visit here to check the repair history in the first place). However, it is also important to check whether the vehicle is properly registered, so I introduced the above process first.
The search results showed that the date on the insurance accident history and the date of delivery after repair were similar. In the end, I was able to infer that the 430,000 won that was processed by insurance was spent on front bumper repair. In addition, I found out that the side mirror repair history was processed without using automobile insurance. In the end, I dug up all the past information of the vehicle.

Of course, a fee is required for the search. Fortunately, it does not exceed 500 won. You can select at least 3 out of 9 items including basic information. I added maintenance history and performance inspection history, which cost 136 won.
It was in 2017 that repair history could be checked. In order to guarantee consumers’ ‘right to know’, the government made maintenance history public without the owner’s consent. However, the history of privately owned cars is not disclosed. Information is disclosed only for used cars that are registered under the name of the seller.
