넷플릭스 중국드라마Korean Translation and Subtitle Analysis of Netflix’s Chinese Drama 《Nothing but Thirty》

The growth of OTT platforms has made it easier to enjoy foreign dramas. However, as complaints were raised about sloppy machine translation or mistranslation of some content, research on the quality of Korean subtitle translation, focusing on English-language content, was conducted first. Research on Korean subtitles for Chinese dramas is relatively lacking. This study aims to conduct research on Korean subtitles for Chinese dramas, focusing on Netflix’s popular Chinese drama 《Barely, Thirty》. First, in order to determine the quality of the translation, the translated sentences were divided into titles, foreign words, Chinese characters, and passive voice. In addition, as a result of checking the quality of the subtitles according to the subtitle notation generally applied in Korean broadcasts, we were able to find some disappointing cases in the uniformity of the subtitles and the appropriateness of punctuation notation.
With the growth of the OTT platform, it is easy to enjoy overseas dramas. However, as viewers complained about the poor machine translation of some contents, research on the translation quality of Korean subtitles was preceded, focusing on British and American dramas. There are relatively few studies on Korean subtitles in Chinese dramas. This study aims to conduct a study on Korean subtitles for Chinese dramas, focusing on Netflix’s popular Chinese drama “Nothing But Thirty”. First of all, the translationese of Korean subtitles were divided into address terms, loan words, sino-koren word, passive voice. In addition, as a result of confirming the quality of subtitles according to the subtitle notation generally applied in Korean broadcasting, the uniformity of subtitles and the appropriateness of punctuation were insufficient.
