With the reform of the light vehicle fuel tax refund system in 2017, the light vehicle fuel tax refunded from 100,000 won per year was increased to 200,000 won. The light vehicle fuel tax refund system is a system implemented to increase the supply of light vehicles and ease the burden on the working class. This is a system that allows owners of compact vehicles with an engine displacement of less than 1000cc to receive a partial refund of fuel tax when they refuel with a fuel purchase card. This system was introduced temporarily from May 2008 to the end of December 2009, but has been extended and is currently scheduled to be implemented until the end of 2018.
Additionally, the limit for the light vehicle fuel tax refund system will be raised from 100,000 won to 200,000 won starting April 10, 2017. The range of card choices has expanded as the fuel purchase only card, which was previously issued only by Shinhan Card, can now be issued by Lotte and Hyundai Card from September 1.
Refunds are eligible for light passenger cars or vans of less than 1000cc. Specific car types include passenger cars such as Morning, Ray, Spark (Matiz), and Atos (discontinued), and vans such as Damas and Labo. However, only one light vehicle per household is applicable, and corporately owned vehicles and official (commercial) vehicles under personal names are excluded from the benefit.
The refund method is simple. When refueling, if you use a fuel purchase card for a light vehicle refund, the refund amount per liter will be deducted from your credit card billing amount. In the case of a check card, the refund amount per liter is deducted from the bank account withdrawal amount. Gasoline and diesel are refunded 250 won per liter, LPG is refunded 160.82 won per leader, and butane is refunded 275 won per kg. Users do not need to apply for a separate refund to the tax office as the credit card company applies for refund all at once.
Fuel purchase cards, which were only issued by Shinhan Card, can now be issued by Hyundai Card and Lotte Card starting in September. It is the best card to use as a gas card as it also provides discounts on car insurance and vehicle maintenance services as standard services. The benefits are so powerful that even people who are not eligible for a fuel tax refund want to apply for the card. For those people, there are also cards for people who are not eligible for refunds. With the Hyundai Card M-light vehicle only card, you can enjoy all other benefits except for fuel tax refund. The Lotte compact car SMART card provides discount benefits in various areas, including gas, public transportation, and shopping. Although the gas discount benefits are less than the Hyundai card, it is a good card for receiving benefits in everyday life such as public transportation, shopping, beauty, and amusement parks. If you are more concerned about versatility than refueling, we recommend that you consider the compact car smart Lotte card. However, you must achieve more than 300,000 won in previous month’s performance, and make sure to check that the integrated discount limit is set at 5% of the previous month’s usage amount!
